Winchester’s Model 70 has a long history as a bolt-action sporting rifle. Winchester described the stainless configuration as intended for use in demanding weather conditions.

270 WSM Chambering

The 270 WSM, or .270 Winchester Short Magnum, is part of Winchester’s Short Magnum cartridge family. Introduced in the early 2000s, the cartridge uses a .277-inch-diameter bullet and a short, relatively wide case design. Winchester’s early Model 70 WSM information listed the 270 WSM with a 24-inch barrel and highlighted its compact short-action configuration.

The 270 WSM is commonly associated with hunting and sporting applications where a .270-caliber cartridge is desired in a short-action rifle platform. Published ballistic figures vary depending on ammunition, bullet construction, barrel length, environmental conditions, and the individual firearm. Winchester’s historical catalog data, for example, listed a 130-grain load at approximately 3,275 feet per second from a 24-inch test barrel, while noting that ammunition and conditions can affect actual results.

For current ammunition specifications and loading information, users should consult the ammunition manufacturer’s published data rather than relying on generalized ballistic figures.

24-Inch Stainless Barrel

The 24-inch barrel is a traditional configuration for the 270 WSM Model 70. The longer barrel provides a familiar balance for a sporting rifle and corresponds with historical Winchester Model 70 WSM configurations. Winchester catalogs specifically listed 24-inch barrels on several Model 70 WSM models.

The stainless construction is another notable feature of this rifle. Stainless steel is commonly selected for firearm components because of its resistance to corrosion compared with conventional carbon-steel finishes. It should not, however, be considered maintenance-free. Proper cleaning, inspection, and storage remain important for any firearm, including stainless models.

Leupold VX-2 Riflescope

This Winchester Model 70 is equipped with a Leupold VX-2 riflescope. The VX-2 is a discontinued Leupold riflescope series, so the exact configuration should be confirmed from the markings on the optic and the photographs accompanying the listing.

Because Leupold produced VX-2 scopes in multiple configurations, specifications such as magnification, objective diameter, reticle, adjustment system, and overall dimensions can vary by individual model. Buyers should verify the specific VX-2 model installed on this rifle rather than assuming a particular configuration.

Leupold also provides downloadable manuals and technical resources for its optics through its website. Current Leupold riflescopes incorporate features such as waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof construction, although specifications should not be attributed to this particular VX-2 without confirming its exact model.

Model 70 Design and Background

The Winchester Model 70 has been produced in numerous configurations and chamberings throughout its history. Depending on the production era, Model 70 rifles can differ in action design, stock configuration, finishes, barrel specifications, and other details.

Historical Winchester catalogs identify the Classic Stainless WSM as using a stainless barrel and action paired with a composite sporter-style stock. Winchester also described the WSM models as utilizing a compact short-action receiver.

Because Model 70 specifications have changed over time, the exact serial number, production period, and configuration of an individual rifle should be verified before assigning additional factory specifications.

Condition and Included Equipment

The condition of this particular Winchester Model 70 Stainless 270 WSM should be evaluated from the photographs and through an appropriate in-person inspection. Areas that may be examined include the stainless finish, stock, barrel, bore, bolt, action, trigger assembly, scope, and scope mounting hardware.

The listing includes the Leupold VX-2 riflescope shown with the rifle. Any additional accessories, rings, bases, lens covers, cases, or other equipment should be considered included only when specifically identified in the listing or photographs.
